Young Puppy Training

The First Year with your Puppy

The first year with your puppy is a fun and exhausting time. It’s a time when you can have the greatest impact on your dog’s behavior. During the first year, we recommend a focus on socialization, enrichment activities, and basic manners. We love when our clients work with us, go to daycare or find opportunities for regular puppy playtime, and attend group classes. We also offer day-training with our junior trainers, for when you want an affordable way to get expert training hours in with your puppy.

Books we love about puppy training

At Calvert Dog Training, we recommend Dog Care for Puppies by Vanessa Charbonneau and Puppy Life Skills by Katherine Davidson for new puppy owners who prefer learning through reading. Charbonneau’s book provides a comprehensive guide on puppy care essentials, including feeding, grooming, and behavior. It’s ideal for understanding and nurturing a young dog’s needs. Davidson’s book focuses on critical puppy development areas like confidence building, habit formation, and training for alone time, making it invaluable for raising a well-adjusted puppy.

Before you get your puppy, plan ahead by doing the following

  • Get supplies that are appropriate for your dog’s life.
  • Plan socialization outings to cover all life experiences and get these in as early as possible without flooding your puppy.
  • Decide on the house rules (Are they allowed up on the couch? Are they allowed to chase squirrels?)
  • Decide on skills you’d like for your puppy to know. Common skills include sit, stay, come, leave-it, leash walking, and play skills.
  • Schedule vet appointment, so your puppy will be vaccinated as early as possible. Your puppy’s opportunities to socialize expand greatly when they are vaccinated early.
Young Puppy Training

During the first months at home with your puppy, train and socialize.

  • Socialize safely. It’s not safe for your unvaccinated puppy to go everywhere, but you can do some things safely.
  • Get everyone in the home helping, including the kids with our puppy training program.
  • Train foundation behaviors, so that you and your puppy build a solid base right from the start.
  • Get puppy playtime. Begin to bring your puppy to daycare to develop skills while they are young.

How to enjoy your puppy’s adolescence

Adolescence for dogs may start as early as 6 months. It can last until 18 months or even as long as three years. This is a time when your dog will begin to become a little more independent. It is normal to see “new” (and not always nice) behaviors pop us as they explore and interact with the world. Adolescent dogs are still developing physically and mentally. This is a great time to reinforce the training that you started when they were a puppy.

1. Continue to socialize!

2. Relax training requirements. Your dogs are going through a period of development and growth. Prioritize fun and enrichment activities.

3. Maintain your dog training skills and your dog’s training with Calvert Dog Training

    • No time? You can sign up for Day Training and have us take your dog out for you while you relax, run errands, or work.

4. Enjoy group training classes as a fun opportunity to engage with you and your dog.

5. Get lots of exercise and social interaction at a local daycare.

What about kids and dogs?

We love to work with kids and dogs. Both are like sponges, soaking up all of the knowledge and opportunities offered to them. Check out the video below (or to the right) to find out about our specialized fun, effective and 100% positive family training package. It is important to actively supervise kids under 12 with dogs. For kids under 5, we like to say, “a dog and kid are on the scene, an adult is in between.” Both dogs are kids are unpredictable, so we rely heavily on management to keep everyone as safe as possible. When everyone is safe and happy, their friendship can grow! We enjoy teaching your kids and puppy to play games where both can more safely interact and have fun!

Why we start young

It’s easier to train in good behaviors with our Puppy Training Packages, while they’re young, then it is to untrain naughty behaviors later when they are teenagers.

We like to begin training young, to establish good manners early, before any potential naughty routines become normal for your puppy and for your kids. As soon as you get your puppy, we want to get started with you!
