Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the most common questions about training, classes, and getting started.
Training Philosophy
Do you use corrections or tools like prong or shock collars?
No. We do not use prong collars, shock collars, or choke chains.
Our focus is on understanding why behavior is happening and changing it — not suppressing it.
What’s the difference between behavior suppression and behavior modification?
Behavior suppression stops a behavior in the moment, often through discomfort or avoidance.
Behavior modification changes the underlying reason the behavior is happening.
We focus on behavior modification so the change holds up in real life — not just during training.
Getting Started
Should I start with a consultation or go straight to lessons?
If you’re unsure what you need, start with a consultation.
If you already know you want help, you can go straight to booking lessons.
How many topics can we cover in an in-home lesson?
Typically 1–3 topics per session.
We focus on doing a few things well so you leave with clear, usable skills.
How many lessons will I need?
It depends on your goals and your dog.
As a general guideline:
- Leash walking often takes about 3–6 lessons
- More complex behavior may take longer
We’ll adjust based on your progress.
What if I’m not sure my dog is a good fit?
That’s completely normal — we can help you figure that out.
Start with a consultation, and we’ll recommend the best path.
Group Classes
What should I bring to class?
- Your dog’s meal in a baggie
- High-value treats
- A treat pouch
- (Teen class) a chew, lick mat, or frozen Kong
What should I leave at home?
- Prong, chain, or electronic collars
- Retractable leashes
- Poop bag holders attached to the leash
When are classes?
Classes run weekly with rolling enrollment, so you can start anytime and attend consecutive sessions that fit your schedule.
Expectations
Will my dog be “trained” after a few sessions?
Training is a process.
You’ll see progress quickly, but lasting change comes from consistency between sessions.
Will you train my dog for me?
We work with both you and your dog.
Your trainer may start behaviors, but your role is what makes them stick long-term.
